JBC North West Plenary 14 and 15 April 2010

The JBC bi-annual plenary meeting took place on 14 & 15 April 2010 in the City of Derry. It was comprised a dinner on the evening of 14 April and a roundtable meeting on the morning of 15 April.

The plenary took the format of a tripartite Regional Economic Forum for business delegates and political leaders from Northern Ireland, Ireland and Scotland.

This event addressed broad investment, economic and employment opportunities and challenges confronting regional economies on the island of Ireland and in Scotland. Models for cross border co-operation in the INTERREG Eligible Areas were also considered, including Derry-Donegal in the context of the region’s evolving economic and spatial framework.

An important related issue for regional economies is the evolving role of cities, such as the city of Derry and the importance of defining their competitive position and future contribution to growth and employment in economies that are increasingly dominated by capital cities.

To facilitate an all-island regional focus, business representatives were invited to participate from IBEC regions including Cork, Donegal, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. A number of Scottish regions were also represented at the meeting.

The event also progressed the establishment of a common platform for the regions represented through the medium of an ‘Atlantic Arc Alliance’. This concept of a ‘supra-national coalition’ was introduced at the JBC plenary meeting in Edinburgh in October 2009 and has attracted widespread support.

Pictured at the JBC dinner in the Guildhall Hall, Derry on 14 April 2010 were Julie Jordan, JBC Director, Robin Newton, MLA, Junior Minister, Office of First and deputy First Minister and Hugh Crossey, Chairman of Joint Business Council Steering Committee.
